Hi all — a quick note to share SculptOK, a small Blender add-on we’ve been using internally, now available for broader testing.
It’s built to help with a very specific but recurring need: turning reference images into usable depth data — whether you’re prepping for relief carving, displacement mapping, or quick base meshes.
What it does (in practice):
• Image → Grayscale Depth Map: Takes a front-facing photo or illustration and outputs a clean, high-contrast grayscale map — calibrated for use in displacement modifiers or export to CNC/laser tools.
• Depth Map → 3D Mesh: Extrudes that depth into a watertight mesh with sensible topology. Good as a starting point for sculpting, not a final asset — think “base form”, not “production model”.
• Runs via a lightweight web service (requires internet), so no local setup or GPU dependency.
No complex panels or dozens of sliders — just two operators:
-
Generate Relief Map
-
Convert to 3D Mesh
We use it for things like:
— Turning concept sketches into sculpting references
— Generating terrain or bas-relief bases from photos
— Rapid prototyping of embossed/debossed patterns
